Day 2 — Zagora Desert Sunrise to Marrakech via Draa Valley

You stop at Ait Benhaddou, an 11th-century ksar on the ancient caravan route from the Sahara to Marrakech. You drive the N9 south through Ouarzazate, then follow the Draa Valley — Morocco's longest river — through 200 kilometres of date palm groves and earthen kasbahs. You arrive in Zagora in the afternoon, just in time for your camel ride into the Tinfou Dunes. You sleep in a desert camp. You watch the sunrise over the Sahara.

- The Tinfou Dunes sit 8 kilometres south of Zagora on the road toward M'Hamid. Your driver takes you there directly.
- Breakfast back at camp. Mint tea, msemen flatbread, honey, argan oil, fresh orange juice.
- Your driver drops you at your riad. You return to Marrakech by late afternoon.

- Stop here for lunch. Your guide knows where the locals actually eat — not the tourist-facing places on the main boulevard, but the side-street restaurants on Avenue Mohammed V where a proper tagine costs 40 dirhams and tastes like someone's mother made it.
- After lunch, a short stop at the Taourirt Kasbah — a 19th-century fortress at the east end of town that once belonged to the Glaoui clan. It is smaller than Ait Benhaddou but less visited, and the carved plaster interior work is some of the finest in the region.
